Celebrating Cohort 15: Inclusion in Action

Over the past year, Cohort 15 of the Matan Institute for Education and Youth Directors has been doing what Matan does best: moving inclusion from theory into practice. As the cohort recently completed its journey together, we had the privilege of hearing their Inclusion Impact Project presentations – and they were incredible! These final presentations were a powerful reminder of what happens when inclusion is approached with intention, creativity, and care.

Across projects, participants emphasized that inclusion is not a checklist or a single program – it is a mindset. They spoke about the importance of designing programs to be inclusive from the start, rather than adding accommodations later, and about how small, low-cost changes can make a big difference in how children, families, and staff experience belonging.

Cohort members shared concrete examples of inclusion in action: flexible learning environments that allow for movement and multiple ways of engaging; sensory supports whose very presence sends a message of welcome; and thoughtful adaptations that help children get what they need without standing out. Again and again, they reminded us that not everyone needs to do the same thing in order to be learning – and that when we embrace difference, everyone benefits.

Just as powerfully, participants named the systems and culture shifts needed to sustain this work. Inclusion cannot rest on one champion alone, and it cannot wait until someone struggles enough to ask for help. It requires shared responsibility, forethought, and a commitment to keep trying – even when progress feels incremental.

We are incredibly proud of Cohort 15. Their work reflects the core of the Matan Institute: building communities where inclusion is embedded, belonging is real, and Jewish education is accessible to all.
